History of Capitol Dog Training Club of Austin, Inc.
Capitol Dog Training Club of Austin, Inc. (CDTCA) formed in the mid 1960’s by a group of dedicated obedience enthusiasts. Many founding members have distinguished themselves in this arena by earning multiple Obedience Trial Championships (OTCH).
CDTCA was formed to promote a wider knowledge and appreciation of the usefulness of training and participation in American Kennel Club (AKC) events and to conduct training classes for dogs and their owners. CDTCA was the first club to offer obedience training to the general public in the late 1960’s.The classes were well received and beneficial to dog owners and served to promote a better understanding of how dogs can move from a backyard pet to the higher status of family member. CDTCA also promotes performance sports by offering matches and trials in compliance with AKC rules, regulations and standards along with promoting cooperation and good sportsmanship in the training and exhibition of dogs.
CDTCA is proud to announce that the current members are holding true to the ideals established by the founding members when they added the newly formed dog agility sport in the early 1990’s. CDTCA began offering agility dog training classes by 1995. Agility is the fastest growing dog sport in the United States. Our classes became very popular and within a few years, CDTCA held their first agility trial in Belton TX. CDTCA was one of the first clubs to hold agility trials at the newly opened Triple Crown Dog Training Center in Hutto, TX and continued to hold one to two trials per year there ‘til 2008.
In 2008, CDTCA moved the trials to the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, TX where we continue to hold three –three day trials in January, April, and late October/November.
To date, our members actively compete in AKC agility trials and other agility forums such as USDAA and NADAC earning the highest titles possible. Current members also train and compete in rally obedience, herding, lure coursing and conformation.
